北海道的氣候和環境與蘇格蘭相近，加上鄰近山區潔淨的水源，Nikka創辦人竹鶴政孝選擇在余市建造首座蒸餾廠，始終堅守以傳統的石炭直火加熱方式蒸餾，經過12年以上長期精心孕育出來的單一麥芽威士忌，煙燻泥炭香氣及柔順香醇的口感是其最大特色。屢獲國際獎項成國內外搶手貨，導致原酒不足而停產，保留品牌，並用「竹鶴」原酒繼續生產。
